Our  Story

Shinwa — A Heart at Peace

Nestled beside the ancient waters and bushland of Thirlmere, Kintsugi Life Design has grown from a deep love of place, creativity, wellbeing and connection with the natural world.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this land and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We honour their enduring relationship with Country and the wisdom that continues to guide respectful ways of living with the land.
We also acknowledge the Estonian families whose stories remain woven into the history of this place and whose legacy forms part of its evolving story.

For many years, this five-hectare property has been a cherished family home and a place of welcome, creativity and restoration. Gardens, gathering spaces and creative sanctuaries have emerged naturally, shaped by a desire to create environments where people feel at ease, restored and connected.

Two modest Estonian cottages have been lovingly transformed into French-inspired villas, reflecting the warmth, character and gentle charm of the countryside that inspired them. What was once a simple tin shed has gradually become an atelier and courtyard where art, conversation and creativity continue to flourish.

The family home has also evolved through a commitment to thoughtful design and a deep appreciation for beauty and nature. Its most recent renovation draws inspiration from Japanese and Scandinavian influences, embracing simplicity, natural materials and a sense of quiet calm.

At the heart of Kintsugi Life Design is the Japanese concept of Shinwa — a heart at peace.
From this intention emerged the Kintsugi Pavilion, a space dedicated to nature-based experiences including Forest Therapy, Art, Mindfulness, Meditation, Yoga, Qigong and gatherings that encourage meaningful connection with self, others and the living world.

Across the property are places to pause, reflect and restore — beneath the trees, beside the gardens, within the warmth of a traditional wood-burning sauna, a hydrotherapy spa, or an outdoor infrared sauna designed for rest and renewal.

Kintsugi Life Design continues to evolve. Future Japanese-inspired gardens, creative spaces and wellbeing offerings will unfold over time, guided by thoughtful placemaking and a desire to create experiences that nurture both people and place.

We do not offer perfection.

We offer birdsong at dawn, changing light through the trees, spaces for conversation and reflection, creative and nature-based retreats, and opportunities to reconnect with what matters most.

If your time here allows you to pause, breathe more deeply, and experience even a glimpse of Shinwa — a heart at peace — then we will be grateful to have shared our place with you.

Our Philosophy

At the heart of Kintsugi Life Design lies a guiding aspiration inspired by the Japanese concept of Shinwa — a heart at peace.

Not simply peace as the absence of noise, but a deeper sense of harmony: balance within oneself, meaningful connection with others, and a respectful relationship with the living world.

We believe that wellbeing is nurtured when people are given space to slow down, reconnect with what matters, and experience the restorative rhythms of nature. In a world that often encourages constant movement and distraction, Kintsugi Life Design offers an invitation to return to simplicity, presence and belonging.

The Experience

The Kintsugi Pavilion emerged from this vision as a place for reflection, creativity and nature connection. Here, Forest Bathing, guided Forest Therapy, art, writing and contemplative practices invite guests into a quieter conversation with themselves, others and the natural world.

Beneath the canopy of trees, amidst birdsong, shifting light and the changing seasons, guests are invited to experience the gentle wisdom of the forest. Creativity, contemplation and nature connection unfold organically, offering opportunities for renewal, insight and restoration.

The surrounding landscape continues to evolve through Japanese-inspired gardens, contemplative outdoor spaces, wellness experiences and places designed for quiet restoration. Kintsugi Life Design is not a finished destination, but an unfolding journey.

A place where creativity and nature meet.

A place where beauty is found in simplicity.

A place where the fractures and transitions of life are honoured rather than hidden.

A place where guests are invited to experience, if only for a moment, the possibility of Shinwa — a heart at peace.

From our Heart to Yours

This place has been shaped slowly, over many years, through family, friendship, creativity, hard work and a deep appreciation for the natural world. It reflects the combined vision of many hands and hearts, the enduring legacy of those who came before us, and a shared commitment to creating spaces that nurture wellbeing, creativity and connection.

If your time here offers an opportunity to pause, breathe more deeply, reconnect with what matters and experience even a glimpse of Shinwa, then Kintsugi Life Design has fulfilled its purpose.

We look forward to welcoming you.
